Canto Ostinato by Simeon ten Holt is known for its meditative and relaxed atmosphere, but also for its exciting performances that are never the same. It is a piece of music consisting of more than 200 different sections with different variations, intended for one or more pianos. Each section and variation can be played and repeated at will. The musicians decide during the concert how and when they vary.
Ten Holt would have turned 100 years old in 2023. Canto Ostinato is his most well-known and beloved work. Every reason for the Piano Duo Scholtes & Janssens to go on tour with this piece. They play the work on two grand pianos. The duo is known for its enchanting sound and their intense and energetic performances. They performed worldwide, from New York to Japan. Their debut in the famous Carnegie Hall was praised by the American press as ‘it might as well have been 25 or 30 fingers, their sound was so grand and fused.’
“We are inspired by the moment, the atmosphere and the audience,” says Lestari Scholtes, “every concert is therefore a unique experience. Even if you have heard the piece a hundred times, every performance is different. It is also exciting for us as pianists every time: what are we going to do, and what will it sound like.”
From young to old, whether you have never attended a classical concert or are a seasoned listener, Canto Ostinato is suitable and interesting for everyone. The concert lasts approximately 60 minutes and prior to the concert there will be an opportunity to enjoy a drink (included in the ticket price).
